DEATH OF Greenock-born priest in Chile

A GREENOCK-born priest has died in South America, where he served for more than 40 years.

The Diocese of Paisley confirmed that Father Neil Sharp died in Chile earlier this week.

Father Sharp was born in Greenock in 1945. After studying at St Peter’s Seminary in Cardross, he was ordained a priest at St Mungo’s in Greenock in June 1970.

He served as curate at St Margaret’s in Johnstone until 1974, then at St Patrick’s in Greenock until 1978.

Since 1979, he and his brother Father Jim Sharp had served in Arica, Chile, while remaining priests of the Diocese of Paisley.

The diocese posted on social media: “We offer our prayers and condolences to Father Jim and his family.”
