Despite a decade of turmoil, United have managed to maintain their appeal when it comes to singing the best players in the world.

But when the club was in full bloom, following its then unprecedented treble in the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in 1999, the idea of rejecting United would have been unfathomable to many.

Not for Rivaldo, however, a Ballon d’Or winner who did not want to leave Barcelona for the Old Trafford club.

Speaking about United and Bolton’s interest, the Brazilian said via Betfair: “At the time, Bolton didn’t contact me, but there were a lot of comments in the papers. If there was communication it was between directors and clubs, and I did that too .” don’t find out about it.

“There were also a lot of comments about Manchester United, but I did very well in Barcelona and was in a good phase.

‘Besides, I liked the city too, so it didn’t matter to me. It was in the papers a lot, but I was happy with it, so I didn’t even try to find out if it was true or not.”

Rivaldo had told the same publication a month earlier that United would have been the only club he would have been interested in joining the Premier League.

The 52-year-old said: “At the time my possible transfer to Manchester United was rumored, they had recently won the Champions League in an epic final against Bayern Munich.

“I sat in the stands at Camp Nou that night and thought that if I were to play in the Premier League one day, United would be my favorite club.

“Of course there were other good clubs in England at the time, such as Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool, but United always caught my attention because of everything they achieved and the way they played at that time.

“Sir Alex Ferguson has always said good things about me when I played against them, so I have a special affection for the club and if I could pick a Premier League club it would be my choice.

“I remember playing against them in the Champions League, especially in two big games that ended with the same result – 3-3 – one at Old Trafford and the other at Camp Nou in the 1998/99 competition.”
