A bridge has collapsed and plunged into a river amid devastating floods in Brazil that have already claimed the lives of 39 people.

The country is experiencing its worst flooding in 80 years after heavy rains in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. About 68 people are still missing in the area affected by the disaster.

Now images have emerged of a swollen river forcing a road bridge to crumble and collapse. The bridge in Porto Alegre, the state capital, was destroyed during the flood.

According to the country’s Geological Survey, the record-breaking floods have displaced thousands of people from their homes and caused widespread damage that exceeds the impact of the 1941 floods. On Thursday, a hydroelectric dam partially collapsed near the town of Bento Gonçalves, sending thousands of liters of water pouring down into a 2.5-meter wave.

According to Brazil’s Civil Defense, more than 24,000 people in the region have fled or been evacuated from their homes. Electricity, network and water supplies have also been severely affected by the floods.
