Press release

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise announces that the Department of Co-operatives, responsible for the registration and regulation of cooperatives, today held a registration ceremony at Hope Creek Village, Stann Creek, for Hummingbird Agro-Producers Co. -operative Society Limited. This new cooperative is the result of joint efforts by a group of individual producers who want to optimize their marketing efforts and increase their entrepreneurial capabilities by organizing themselves into a formal enterprise. This subjects them to inspection and reporting requirements, gives them access to audit and conflict resolution services, and provides them with entrepreneurial development programs, among other things.

The new cooperative, whose members have been working together since April 2022, is engaged in the production of pitahaya (dragon fruit) and passion fruit. It has nineteen (19) members, ten (10) women and nine (9) men, including youth, who come from various communities and villages including Hope Creek, Mullins River, Gales Point Manatee and Dangriga Town.

Mr. Leonel Requena, National Coordinator, GEF Small Grants Programme, UNDP, Belize delivered the keynote speech. Other comments were also made by Mr. Gareth Murillo, Registrar of Cooperatives, and Ms. Giget Villafranco, President of the Cooperative. Present were the members of the cooperative and other interested stakeholders from the sector.
