Kim ‘Howard’ Johnson, biographer of Monty Python, delivers keynote address at the commencement ceremony of IVCC – Shaw Local

Approximately 225 students who have earned degrees or certificates are expected to participate in Illinois Valley Community College’s 58th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 18.

Kim ‘Howard’ Johnson will be the keynote speaker. Johnson is an Ottawa native, author, comedy performer and instructor, and “Monty Python” biographer.

The ceremony will also include remarks from incoming Student Trustee Emma Garretson and outgoing Student Trustee Elizabeth Boyles, as well as President Tracy Morris. The winner of the Paul Simon Essay Contest, Lauren Frost, will read her essay.

The ceremony starts at 1:30 PM. The doors of the IVCC Gym open at 12:00. A reception will follow immediately after the ceremony.

May is also a month of celebration for nursing and adult education graduates.

Alpha Delta Nu Induction

The Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society induction will take place on Tuesday, May 7 at 5:30 PM in C-316.

Adult education

The 43rd annual Adult Education Recognition event begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, at the Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Center. The ceremony will be followed by a reception in CTC 124-125.

Students Alhora Sbarbaro and Maren Barreras will speak, and Dr. Morris will give her speech. Sbarbaro graduated from the GED and Barreras graduated from the GED and completed Bridge-to-Careers/ICAPS.

Nearly 100 students will be invited to participate, including 60 GED completers, 13 Bridge-to-Careers completers, 13 Integrated Career & Academic Preparation System completers and two who have completed citizenship courses.
