Philadelphia Union signs goalkeeper Andrew Rick

Philadelphia Union announced today that they have signed goalkeeper Andrew Rick, making him the 23rd Homegrown player in Union history. Rick, a student at the YSC Academy and a member of the Union Academy since 2016, has a guaranteed contract until 2028 with an option for 2029.

“Andrew has made remarkable strides in his growth and development during his time at the Academy and Union II,” said Philadelphia Union sporting director Ernst Tanner. “He has shown that he is able to rise up in big moments and keep his composure. As we add more depth to our goalkeeping unit, he will have the opportunity to continue working with and learning from the top talent in our league and we are confident he will be ready when called upon.”

The 18-year-old Rick signed his first professional contract with Union II in 2023. Since making his MLS NEXT Pro debut on September 11, 2022, Rick has registered 82 saves in 26 total appearances. This season he has made six appearances (six starts), making 17 saves while maintaining a GAA of 1.17. On April 11, 2024, Rick made the decisive save against Orlando City B after seven rounds in the post-regulation shootout to secure the extra point for Union II. On April 21, Rick made a save in the post-regulation shootout against undefeated New York Red Bulls II to secure the extra point at home. Rick recently signed four short-term deals this season for the Union’s first-team matches against Sporting Kansas City, Portland Timbers, Nashville SC and Seattle Sounders FC.

A longtime Union Academy standout, Rick led the team to victory in the U17 2022 MLS NEXT Cup and secured a spot in the U17 2022 MLS NEXT All-Star game. He continued his success in the U17 2023 Generation Adidas Cup, making crucial saves to help the team advance to the quarter-finals and recording a shutout victory in the championship match. In 2021, he played a key role in the U15 team’s journey to the semifinals of the MLS NEXT Cup and in 2019, he led his team to win the U13 Concacaf Champions League tournament in Costa Rica, where he was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

Internationally, Rick received an invitation to the U.S. Men’s National Team U17 training camp in Palm Beach, Florida in 2023, as one of 23 players called up to participate in the camp.
